Maintenance of the Illa d´Avall natural space in Jafre, Baix Empordà

After the signing of the agreement with the Jafre City Council, which allows the Consorci del Ter to manage this natural area through a river guard agreement, management actions have been carried out in order to give continuity to the actions carried out during the LIFE Riparia-Ter (2010-2013), with the purpose of promoting the habitats, recovering forest areas after the fire of 2013 and maintaining the itinerary of public use for the discovery of the surroundings. In addition, in collaboration with local conservation entities such as Galanthus, an extension of the itineraries has been done, native species have been planted and new signals have been placed in aim to reinforce the public use indications. On the other hand, it is planned that new actions will be carried out for improvements to the ponds created during the LIFE projects and removing the accumulations of dead biomass appeared after the strong floods of last fall.

The Consorci del Ter improves the riverside forest in Bescanó, Sant Gregori and Girona

Different restoration works on riverside habitats of the Ter River on Illa de la Pilastra, Illa de Pedret and Can Salvatella Forest, TER1 and TER3 areas, respectively, have begun this week. These actions are part of the project "Recovery of riparian habitats of the Ter River (Riparia-Ter)", that took place in the area and was managed by the Consorci del Ter between the years 2010 and 2013. These works are planned in the Post-LIFE Conservation Plan and they must guarantee the conservation of the different areas of action of the Riparia-Ter since January 2014, once the project has finished.
On the one hand, in Illa de la Pilastra, it is planned to set the ground and maintain the itinerary. New signaling and public use elements will be installed and fallen trees will be removed from the itineraries, as well as waste that arrived during the last floods. Forestry will also be carried out; among others, the treatment of invasive vegetation with phytosanitary injections of plant protection products, clearing and maintenance of plantations carried out within the framework of the LIFE + Riparia-Ter project. The activities are carried out by the Fundació Onyar-la Selva, from the Ramon Noguera Foundation Group.
On the other hand, in the Illa de Pedret and in the Can Salvatella Forest, works will be carried out to control invasive species by means of chemical and / or physical means. In the forest of Can Salvatella, forestry improvements will be carried out to favor the native riparian habitats and gradually replace the old invasive poplar plantation. There will be reforestation and plantations of some trees in the areas where poplars have been removed and there is no native underlying forest, up to a maximum of 25 feet of species such as ash, willow, native poplar or oak. The waste appeared in the area of action will also be removed. The works have been made by Galanthus.
The works will take place until summer.

The Consorci del Ter is carrying out maintenance work on Illa de la Pilastra

Throughout this summer and in autumn, the social insertion Foundation Brot SLU is carrying out the annual maintenance work on the Illa de la Pilastra´s, included in the Post-LIFE Conservation Plan of the "Recovery of the riparian habitats of the Ter river (Riparia-Ter)" that ended in 2013. This year the path has been cleared again and river branches have been removed. Due to strong floods during the rainy last year, lots of branches and trees have fallen down in the area. Damaged signals have also been arranged as a result of acts of vandalism that occasionally occur. It is planned that the last planned actions of maintenance of this natural space will be carried out until next November.

A delegation of Valencian mayors visit the Illa de la Pilastra

On September the 5th, a dozen mayors who are part of the Consorci de la Ribera visited the Consorci del Ter. Among other activities, the president of the Consorci del Ter and its director, Joaquim Roca and Ponç Feliu, respectively, shared with them a short walk to the Illa de la Pilastra to discover the environment, to explain the management that is carried out and to present the LIFE Riparia-Ter project.

The Consorci del Ter formalizes two custodial agreements in Illa de la Pilastra and Illa d´Avall

During this spring, both Bescanó and Jafre City Councils, have approved a custody agreement with the Consorci del Ter to manage the Pilastra river island (Bescanó, Sant Gregori and Salt) and the Illa d’Avall area (Jafre). The objective is to guarantee the protection and development of the ecosystem and river environment.
The documents establish a management assignment to the Consorci del Ter in order to carry out projects, field work and execution of tasks aimed at the conservation, maintenance and improvement of the river ecosystem. The Consorci has undertaken to promote and elaborate proposals for the management of the spaces and the annual programming of the planned actions.
At the moment, the Post-LIFE Management and Conservation Plan, prepared after the completion of LIFE Riparia-Ter "Recovery of the riparian habitats on the River Ter" (2010-2013), needs to be redefined. A project, in which, through both Illa d’Avall and Illa de la Pilastra, the existing habitats and species were studied and reported, and the action priorities were defined. Now, with the redefinition of these Management and Conservation Plans, new actions that allow the improvement and conservation of the existing riverbank habitats will take place, as well as the maintenance and improvement of the public use infrastructures created with the Riparia-Ter.
Illa de la Pilastra area has ​​approximately 7,027 hectares and Illa d’Avall around 25,70 hectares.

The Consell de Govern of the Consorci del Ter contracts the works on the Illa de la Pilastra and the Bosc de Can Salvatella included in the Post-LIFE Conservation Plan of Riparia-Ter

The Consell de Govern (Governing Council) of the Consorci del Ter of November 9 approved the improvement and the recovery of riparian habitats of the Ter river, included in the Post-LIFE Conservation Plan of the project "Recovery of riparian habitats of the Ter river (Riparia -Ter)" executed between the years 2010 and 2013, both of the Illa de la Pilastra (zone TER1) and of the Bosc de Can Salvatella in Girona (zone TER3). The first ones will be done by Brot SLU (Company of Oscobe Foundation insertion) and the second by Bosquerols SCCL.
On the one hand, in the Illa de la Pilastra it is planned to arrange signage and public use elements damaged as a result of vandalism, as well as installing new signaling and public use elements. The main plot of the itinerary will also be arranged, there will be different areas of maintenance, forest improvement work and invasive vegetation treatment with flotation injections of phytosanitary products.
On the other hand, in the Can Salvatella Forest, a forest improvement of the poplar is planned to be done, for the stability and quality of the forest mass, eliminating the most damaged trees to favor a specific composition closer to a forest of natural river shore, favoring the native species and gradually replacing the plantation of poplars. There will also be works to control invasive alien species, especially the damaged ones. In addition, a treatment of the poplar will be carried out eliminating dead, decrepit and / or dangerous trees, as well as those that make access or visibility difficult in the surroundings of the heliport and the Trueta hospital.

The Consorci de Ter completes the work for the management of the Illa de la Pilastra during 2016

During the recent months, different actions have been carried out on the Illa de la Pilastra, in the municipalities of Bescanó and Sant Gregori, contained in the Post-LIFE Conservation Plan, after the project "Recovery of riparian habitats Ter (Riparia-Ter)" that has been executed between 2010 and 2013. These works have been done by the Fundació Onyar-la Selva for an amount of 6,500 euros, VAT included, and will last until the middle of 2017.
In particular the works have been on keeping the tracks and itineraries, both the firm and shrub rods, and also the public information signals damaged by vandalism, and also several actions to control invasive plants. In addition, the area where the hide is has been improved by a fence not to scare the animals when accessing and to make better observations of birds and other animals. Moreover, the fence of the north side has benn restored.
This summer, a field work with volunteers has allowed to withdraw many debris and rubble, as well as improve the paths.

The Consorci del Ter keeps working on the conservation and managing of the riparian forest of Can Salvatella as its planned for the Post-LIFE Riparia-Ter project

During this year, several works for managing the forest of Can Salvatella in Girona contained in the Post-LIFE conservation plans have been executed by the Consorci del Ter after the project LIFE + Nature "Recovery of riparian habitats of the river Ter (Riparia-Ter)" to ensure the maintenance of the space.
The works, funded by the City of Girona, had a cost of 2,917.45 euros. The Fundació Mas Xirgu has executed them, which consisted in maintaining the trace of the way through cutting the shrub and herbaceous vegetation and occasional removal of lying dead trees. This task has been done both during summer and autumn. In addition, several invasive species have been treated, such as Ailanthus altissima (according to the protocol of the Diputació de Girona) and others such as Robinia pseudoacacia and and Gleditzia triacanthos through injecting glyphosate in the phloem. The works also include a comprehensive review of the whole area, for invasive plants during this autumn and the spring of next year.

Two Youth Camps have worked during the summer in the Post-LIFE project

During last August two youth camps have worked in Sant Gregori and Salt, with a global participation of 38 young people in the Post-LIFE works of Illa de la Pilastra and some ponds in Salt, with the the support of the Consorci del Ter, promoter and executor of the project we Riparia-Ter.
First of all, in Sant Gregori, it took place between 1st and 15th August, in which 23 young people between 14 and 17 years-old, took part in the work camp "Illa de la Pilastra" organized by the youth association “El Quaranta-dos”. Regarding the LIFE Riparia-Ter they worked in the maintenance of the paths, control of invasive alien vegetation (marking of invasive plants) and waste collection.
The other work camp was organized from 21st August to 3rd September in Salt. The participants were 15 young people between 18 and 29 years-old from different countries (Germany, Spain, Ukraine, Japan, Turkey and Mexico). This field work was organized by the international non-profit organization "El Cau de Salt." The aim was to learn and work to improve the Nature 2000 Network “Banks of the Lower Ter (ES5120011)” and also to know the flora and fauna of the river Ter and in particular in the area of ​​Salt ponds and marshes. The young people did actions similar to Post-LIFE Illa de la Pilastra and also worked hard for improving the ponds created during the Riparia-Ter project.

Informative tour at the Illa de la Pilastra with students of the Institute “La Miquela” from Bescanó

The Manager of the Consorci del Ter Ponç Feliu, guided a visit on March 18 with the 49 students of the High School “La Miquela”, from Bescanó at the Natura 2000 "banks of the Lower Ter", in particular to the “Illa de la Pilastra”. While visiting the space, Feliu explained various aspects of the river Ter, as well as the actions that were developed under the LIFE Riparia-Ter during the years 2010 and 2013.

The Consorci del Ter executes the works for the recovery of Can Salvatella Forest, in Girona, in the framework of the activities Post-LIFE Project Riparia-Ter

During the year 2015 the Consorci del Ter have worked in the recovering of the riparian habitats of the River Ter in Girona, in the forest of Can Salvatella under the Post-LIFE Conservation Plan; a plan was developed to ensure the conservation of the area of action after the execution of the project "Recovery of riparian habitats of the Ter river (Riparia-Ter)" between 2010 and 2013 in the space Natura 2000 "banks of the Lower Ter" and received European funds. The Riparia-Ter project worked to improve the forests of different areas of activity through forestry works, control of invasive species and reforestation. It also recovered temporary flood zones and ordered public use.
The work in this annuity, consisted in the arrangement and maintenance of the firm along the Ruta del Ter (Ter Route), that passes through the forest of Can Salvatella and also worked in the treatment of invasive species. The Foundation Mas Xirgu has executed the works, and had a cost of 5233.30 euros, VAT excluded.
On one hand, the trace of the route of the Ruta del Ter has been cleared passing through the place, about 615 linear meters with the removal of fallen trees and waste collection. The firm has also been arranged from the new bridge of Pedret to the junction of Ter Route in the town of Sarrià de Ter. On the other hand, works to treat invasive species such as Ailanthus altissima and Robinia pseudoacacia and the three-thorned acacia Gleditsia triacanthos have been done.

Consorci del Ter receives the award for Best Project Life-Nature project Riparia-Ter in Brussels

The LIFE + Nature project "Recovery of riparian habitats of the River Ter (Riparia-Ter)" coordinated by Consorci del Ter has been awarded as one of the 13 best LIFE projects evaluated in 2014 a total of 46 by the European Union. It so happens that, since these projects are recognized, is the first time that Catalonia is distinguished with LIFE Nature project. The award ceremony took place on June 4 in Brussels, in the frame of the European Green Week. The award was accepted by the President of the Consorci del Ter, Jordi Munell, the First Vice President, Mr. Pere Prat, and the third vice president, Mr. Gaietà Garcia, and also the vocal, Mr. Josep Rafús and the manager of Consorci del Ter, Mr. Ponç Feliu.

The activities on the “Illa de la Pilastra” covered in Post-LIFE Conservation Plan have just started

In late February began the works for recovering riparian habitats in the river Ter “Illa de la Pilastra” covered in Post-LIFE Conservation Plan approved in late 2013 by Consorci del Ter and the councils of Bescanó, Sant Gregori and Salt.
This plan ensures the conservation area of ​​the "Illa de la Pilastra" since January 2014, after the completion of the European project "Recovery of riparian habitats of the River Ter (Riparia-Ter)" which was carried out between the years 2010 and 2013 to improve riparian habitat space Natura 2000 network "Banks of the Lower Ter." During these four years the project has worked for the improvement of forests in different areas of activity ("Illa de la Pilastra", "Hortes i Deveses" de Salt and Girona, "Bosc de Can Salvatella" in Girona and "Illa d’Avall" in Jafre) through forestry, reforestation and control of invasive species. It also recovered temporary flood zones and ordered public use.
In the "Illa de la Pilastra" it will take place this arrangement and also maintaining the discovery route of the island, the restoration of the stone steps of the north and south arm, among other tasks like shrub manual maintenance and cane plantations. The actions are carried out by the Fundació Drissa, a social enterprise which presented the most favorable financial budget between the offers received.
Regarding to the conservation of the route discovery it was necessary to replace damaged signs, in particular a poster and to set the firm from the main road to the hide, so marking it as removing logs and other debris deposited by the flood that took place during December 2014. it also includes maintenance of the layout of the route throughout the year and the withdrawal of any fallen trees or lying, removal of debris and garbage collection. Regarding the steps of the north and south arms of the island, it was necessary to replace the stones moved by the flood and cabbage for new ones to access again to the island.

The LIFE + Riparia-Ter led by Consorci del Ter has been selected by the European Union as one of the 13 best LIFE Nature Projects

The LIFE + Nature "Recovery of riparian habitats of the River Ter (Riparia-Ter)" coordinated by Consorci del Ter has been selected by the European Union as one of the 13 best LIFE projects evaluated in 2014 in a total of 46 projectes. In Spain this year there is only one more distinguished, which is "estuary of the Basque Country." Since these projects are recognized, it is the first time in Catalonia that a LIFE Nature project has been selected. In April the European Commission will announce the three best of the best from these 13 projects.
The award ceremony will take place on June 4 in Brussels, where the consortium will make a brief presentation of the Riparia-Ter Project.
The Consorci del Ter managed the projecte between 2010 and 2013 as a beneficiary of the European project as the coordinator of Riparia-Ter. The project allowed to manage 75 ha. of riparian forest in the Natura 2000 network in the "Banks of the Lower Ter." This was done in four areas of the river Ter, Isle of Pilastra (St. Gregori-Bescanó-Salt), in the Hortes i Deveses de Salt (Salt-Girona), the Bosc de Can Salvatella and Illa de Pedret (Girona) and the Illa d’Avall (Jafre). The councils of Bescanó, Salt and Girona were beneficiaries members, although the project was also developed in Sant Gregori and Jafre in coordination with their municipalities.
The European funds helped half the cost of the project -823,705.15 euros- and allowed to improve riparian forests through forestry, reforestation and control of invasive species. It also recovered temporary flood zones and do management actions for public use. The project was unveiled through visits, lectures and an exhibition which allowed to reach more than 3,000 people from the Ter basin.

Recovery of the “Illa d’Avall” affected by the fire in November 2013

Diputació de Girona, Obra Social "la Caixa", Generalitat de Catalunya and the Consorci del Ter perform recovery actions of the natural interest of the “Illa d’Avall” in jafre affected by wildfire last year, worth 43,000 euros. The work performed by seven people at risk of exclusion from the foundation Onyar La Selva, and consist of the removal of vegetation burned, control rod, and planting native riparian vegetation, among other actions.

Eighty people attended activities discovered on "Illa de la Pilastra"

On March 29 “Ajuntament de Bescanó”, in collaboration with the “Consorci del Ter”, organized activity discovery of the “Illa de la Pilastra” where they participate eighty people. Popular planted on Illa d´Avall

This Sunday January 26th Consorci del Ter, along with the City of Jafre, Associació el Blauet and Kayak del Ter organized a number of activities for recovery of Illa d´Avall after the fire that hit the area on 11 November. It is a space included in the Natura 2000 Network "Riberes del Baix Ter" and the last four years had been benefited from LIFE + Nature. Activities in which participated the Minister of Territory and Sustainability, Hon. Mr. Santi Vila and Deputy Environment Girona Provincial Council, Mr. Miquel Calm, consisted of a popular planting of 200 trees and riverside willows, poplars, ashes and elders, and garbage collection (scrap metal, plastic, glass ... ) both in the interior of the island and the riverTer with kayaks from Colomers to Verges . During the day they also install nest boxes. The activities began at 11 in the morning until half past two in the afternoon were followed for eighty people.

Empordà fire has affected “Illa d’Avall”

The fire was declared at 18:27 on Monday 11 November, for reasons under investigation, between the villages of Vilopriu and Camallera, was affected “Illa d’Avall” in Jafre. In the town of Jafre crossed the north bank of the Ter River south towards Foixà. The total area of 551,05 hectares has been burnt, which correspond to 34,19 Jafre. “Illa d’Avall” has been one of the areas of action of the LIFE + Nature Riparia-Ter has focused on improving riparian habitats and to control and manage access tho he banks of “Riberes del Baix Ter”. Branding at Ter Vell (Torroella de Montgrí-L’Estartit)

Last Sunday 6th October we took part of another Branding day that gathered around 50 people.
At 8 am the participants met at Ter Vell Lake and they discovered some birds and did the branding with El Blauet association. Later, 30 people walked to Gola del Ter, where nowadays the river meets sea, crossing the Pletera wetland, identifying more birds and visiting the landscape, with members of the city council and technicians of the Parc Natural del Montgrí, les Illes Medes and el Baix Ter.

Bird Banding Journey in Salt

On 22nd September el “Consorci del Ter”, Blauet Association, Marfull Association and Salt City Council organized a Bird Banding Journey in Salt, one of the zones of project LIFE + Nature "Recovery of riparian habitats on the Ter River (Riparia-Ter)." The activity lasted all the morning and around 60 people took part. We could identify 49 birds of 13 different species!

We also have improved the accessibility, designed an itinerary around the place and installed a hide to watch the birds. Temporary flood areas of the LIFE + Nature Riparia-Ter have a good look

Spring rains in recent weeks have allowed temporary flood zones -created during the execution of the LIFE + Nature "Recovery of the riparian habitats on the Ter River (Riparia-Ter)"- that currently have a good look. For example reservoirs on the "Illla d´Avall" in Jafre, where you can see: great reed warbler, small saplings of poplar, poplar, willow and full of tadpoles. In the following link you can see pictures of the Massana pond and the "Gorga d´en Quirze" (area TER-2) as well as the "Illa d´Avall" (area TER-4).

Spring activities in Riparia-Ter zones

This spring, during April and May, the "Consorci del Ter" together with the "el Blauet" Association has organized trips to different parts of the Riparia-Ter facilitating people to know closely the activities of the project. VI Conference of Environment in Girona

On April-20th and April-21st there will be the Environment Conference in Girona, at the "Centre Cívic Ter". Reach the sixth edition where will be presented projects, experiments and research works about environment that have been made in the city. The "Consorci del Ter" will inform the work that has been made through the project LIFE + Nature Riparia-Ter. Planting trees with schools

This week the students of Sant Gregori, Bescanó, and Salt will be planting riparian trees during three times in areas included in the project LIFE + Natura Riparia-Ter. There will be two planting in the "Illa del Pilastre", on March-20th with 50 children of 5th grade in primary school from Sant Gregori and on March-21st with 50 children of 4th grade in primary school from Bescanó. On Friday March-22nd there will be the last planting in the area of "Deveses de Salt" where 400 students from Salt will participate. The plantations will be conducted by experts of the "Consorci del Ter". This action aims to make students aware of the activities of the project and the importance of such actions.

Popular Cleanning in "Illa d´Avall" (Jafre)

"Kayak del Ter" organize on Sunday 17 March, with the collaboration of the "Cosorci del Ter" (Ter Consortium), a popular cleaning inside the river Ter with kayak. The action will begin in Colomers and will go until the "Illa d´Avall de Jafre", where there will be different activities related to the LIFE + Nature Riparia-Ter project. It will be a quiet descent by the Ter waters with a garbage bag. It will begin at 10 am and will finish at 2 pm including lunch. Registration is free: info@kayakdelter.com or in Colomers on Sunday from 9 am to 10 am. You can also collect plastic from the river sides.

Planting of trees in Girona

During March there will be different actions planting riparian trees with the help of students in the areas of action of the LIFE + Nature Riparia-Ter project. The first one will be on Sunday March 10th in Girona with a group of scouts. The event will take place at the Santa Eugenia wetlands area between 9:30 am to 2:00 pm.

Visit with students

Consorci del Ter organized on January 11th a visit with universitary students to see the different activities being carried out within de framework of the LIFE + Nature "Recovery of the riparian habitats on the River Ter (Riparia-Ter)". Participated in that visit 32 students from the University of Girona (UdG) who are pursuing three masters: Master in Science and Technology of Water, Environment Master, Interuniversity Master in Policy and Planning for Cities, Environment and Landscape. The last one is international and will run in conjunction with the following universities: University Autonoma of Barcelona (UAB), University of Lisbon, University of Sassari and University of Venice.

During the day they visited the area TER-2, "Deveses de Salt", and the area TER-4, "Illa d´Avall" in Jafre. The students received explanations from the project technical and information on paper. Took special care the creation of temporary flood zones and their importance for biodiversity. It was also emphasized the control of invasive alien species, an issue which was discussed with the students. Riparia-Ter project works are progressing well

On September, most of the works of Riparia-Ter restarted, after being stopped because of the bird breeding period and the high risk of fire last summer. Since then, several actions have been carried out, like restoring riparian habitats. Also, some maintenance actions have been done in areas with invasive vegetation and temporary flood zones have been created. On January, it is planned to do several tree plantations.

Day of Bird Banding

The past Sunday, on October the 7th, and being the International Bird Day, the Alba-Ter Consortium and the Blauet Association organized a Bird Banding Journey in Salt, one of the zones of project LIFE + Nature "Recovery of riparian habitats on the Ter River (Riparia-Ter)." The activity was a great success, with over seventy attendees, and was highly valued by participants. The journey began at 8 am and lasted until noon. During the activity, the information of Riparia-Ter project was given to people. Work visits in the areas of the LIFE + Nature Riparia-Ter project

On September the 28th, the General Manager of Environment and Biodiversity of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Mr. Josep Escorihuela, visited the works that have been done in the project of the LIFE + Nature "Recovery of riparian habitats of the Ter River (Riparia-Ter)." In particular, he saw the evolution of the works and followed the explanations of the staff associated to the project in the areas TER-2, “Deveses i Hortes” from Salt and Girona and the zone TER-4, in l’Illa d’Avall in Jafre. The visit was also attended by Concha Marchante, Subdirector of Biodiversity, and Mr. Lluís Balaguer the Chief of Areas of Natural Interest Department from the General Direction of Environment and Biodiversity.
