Illa de la Pilastra
This year the Alba-Ter Consortium, together with the councils of Bescanó, Sant Gregori, Salt, Girona and Jafre, has launched the European Life + Nature Project "Recovery of riparian habitats on the Ter river (Riparia-Ter)". The main objective of this project is the recovery of the riverside forest, particularly alluvial forests of alder (Alnus glutinosa) (Habitat 91E0*), white willow (Salix alba) and white poplar (Populus alba) (Habitat 92A0) and temporary Mediterranean ponds (Habitat 3170*). Another objective of the project is the management and control of access to the target sites to prevent deterioration of these ecosystems as a result of excessive human use, above all in suburban areas. It aims to introduce the importance of natural resources for obtaining a sustainable management compatible with the conservation of natural areas.

Riparia-Ter is being developed in the Natura 2000 Network Riberes del Baix Ter (ES5120011) area between 2010 and 2013, focusing on four zones: "L´Illa de la Pilastra" (Bescanó-Sant Gregori-Salt), "Les Deveses i hortes" (Salt-Girona), "L´Illa del Ter" in Pedret and "El Bosc de Can Salvatella" (Girona) and "L´Illa d´Avall" (Jafre) and covering a surface area of approximately 140 hectares.

Investment in the project amounts to €929,100, half of which is financed by the European Union (EU) and the remainder by the Alba-Ter Consortium, the councils of Bescanó, Salt and Girona, the Provincial Government of Girona and La Caixa´s Social Project Fund.

NATURA 2000 NETWORK

Author: Teia Puigvert, actions manager Life + Riparia-Ter

The Natura 2000 Network is a European network of nature protection areas.
There are two types of areas: Special Areas of Conservation (SACs), designated in accordance with the EC Habitats Directive and Special Protection Areas (SPAs) for birds, created under the EC Birds Directive.
The objective is to guarantee survival in the long term of valuable European species and habitats that are most under threat, contributing to preventing the loss of biodiversity.
The Catalan areas that are part of this network cover a total of 1,046,139 hectares, approximately 30% of Catalonia.
